Peter Chapman (pchapman@pobox.com)

Profile

14 Years of Management experience (Software Development, Technical Support, Software QA and Integration Services), 9 years at Director level. Throughout my career I have maintained a hands-on role in software development. At Workflow By Design this constituted around 60% of my work load. In the 3+ years since then I have been fully dedicated to developing and architecting in PHP and related LAMP and frontend javascript/CSS/(X)HTML technologies both in a freelance and permanent capacity. I would be happy to consider a position in Management or Software Development.

Certifications

Zend Certified Engineer - PHP5

Experience

Lead PHP Engineer/Architect

RueLaLa, Boston, MA: May 2010 - Present

I joined RueLaLa to get back into a main stream team based environment and gain more experience in high traffic sites. This also gave me an opportunity to work with the Symfony framework which I have come to respect as a well engineered application stack for PHP. I have enjoyed my time at RueLaLa immensely, however the company has decided to re-platform to a fully packaged java based solution and I have decided to stay focussed primarily on PHP.

Freelance Consulting and Web Development

Working from home: July 2009 - May 2010

After leaving DNSStuff, I re-kindled my freelance activities while looking for the right permanent position. In August 2009, I was approached by Old Town Creative (www.oldtowncreative.com) to take up a full-time six month contract to develop a site for National Geographic based on the Old Town Creative CMS back-end (GeoConsensus). The site in question is www.actionatlas.org, I developed this from the ground up on top of Zend and Doctrine ORM Frameworks, using jQuery on the browser side. This contract was extended through April 2010.

Senior Software Engineer

DNSstuff, Newburyport, MA: September 2008 - June 2009

Joining DNSstuff gave me the opportunity to get stuck into some serious PHP framework development while working with some neat networking technology and a great company culture. I left DNSstuff at the end of May as a casualty of a round of layoffs. Despite the relatively short tenure, I have no regrets and appreciated the opportunity to get involved in some mainstream development, using new technologies and a high traffic web-site. Most of my work at DNSstuff was centered around Zend Framework, Joomla and jQuery.

Technology Director/Software Developer

Workflow By Design, Beverly, MA: 1999 - 2008

Providing web based workflow solutions targeted primarily at the creative design industry. Includes asset/project management, file sharing and routing & approval applications along with a mix of custom solutions. Responsibilities include managing the software development team and IT department. Since many of our solutions are highly customized and in some cases built from the ground up, part of my role involves customer liaison. This includes pre/post sales meetings and developing the specifications.

During my tenure at WBD, we have migrated from a distributed mix of technologies to the current centralized web application model. The software base is fully object oriented PHP with a complimentary client-side Javascript framework. This allows us to deploy a modern user interface leveraging CSS and AJAX. On the group IT side, I have overseen the move to new premises and implementation of enterprise level infrastructure.

In 2003, InTouch (a UK/European based reprographics company) purchased MBD/WBD. This acquisition added reprographics to the design/workflow solution mix and provided InTouch with a US presence. This change resulted in WBD gaining several global clients and a corresponding opportunity to embrace localization issues and more robust SLAs.

In 2005, InTouch was purchased by a US based company (Matthews Inc.). Thus, we are now officially Matthews Brand Solutions DBA WBD.

Director Advanced Management Services (AMS)

WAM!NET Inc. Minneapolis, MN: 1998 - 1999

In March 1998, 4-Sight was acquired by WAM!NET Inc. based in the Twin Cities. I accepted an offer to relocate to Minneapolis and fill a position as Director of Advanced Management Services (AMS). AMS encompassed product integration, global expansion and software quality assurance. In addition to driving the quality and integration of new products into Operations, I was heavily involved in developing the WAM!NET operations infrastructure in Europe (Operations Center based in Belgium).

Manager - Support/QA/IT

4-Sight Inc. Boston, MA: 1994 - 1998

After coaching two senior engineers into management roles for the QA and Technical Support departments in Bournemouth, I relocated to the USA along with the heads of Sales and Marketing to develop 4-Sight presence in the USA. My responsibilities covered all technical aspects of this venture, including the creation of a technical support group and development/maintenance of our company intranet and IT systems. During this period, I orchestrated three office relocations within the US (Des Moines, IA to Boston, MA and then again within Boston).

Manager - Support/QA

4-Sight International, Bournemouth, UK: 1991 - 1994

I joined 4-Sight. to develop their Technical Support department and assist with software development. During my first year at 4-Sight, I developed an API for their Client/Server Fax application. Using this API, I went on to write an external "Plug In" for ACI's 4th Dimension Database. Both the API and 4th Dimension External were integrated into the 4-Sight Fax product.

World Travel: 1990 - 1991

Fulfilled a lifelong ambition to travel and took 18 months out to backpack around Europe, Africa, Australia, and South East Asia.

Tech Support/Field Service Engineer

CSS Systems, London, UK: 1987 - 1990

(Multi-vendor P.C. Dealers - Apple, Compaq, Apricot, IBM) Initially joined as a Field Service Engineer. Through a combination of hands-on experience and technical training, I developed a strong understanding of many technologies of the time. This included Novell, Windows, DOS and Apple, along with TCP/IP, AppleTalk and token-ring networking envitronments. Promoted to Technical Support in May 87, responsible for customer support and training, network planning and installation. Ultimately headed up the technical support division at a branch Dealership.

Technical Support/Service

Microtech, Zimbabwe Ltd.: 1985 - 1987

I joined Microtech after graduating from college (NHC electronics and control systems). During my tenure at Microtech, the company became Apple's sole distributor for southern Africa. This change effectively upgraded the company to an Apple level 2 support center and I was thrust into the technical details of everything Apple.
